New Releases Start This Week

I feel much better and much more productive this year, and it's good to feel relatively normal again.

On Friday, Feline Navidad (Millersburg Magick Mysteries #4) will finally be hitting retail stores. Yep,  Christmas story on Valentine's Day. That's assuming everybody goes live at that time. I'm still uploading to the files to the other retailers, but Amazon has been on pre-order for a bit.

I'm also getting Alter Ego's books reissued on Amazon, again FINALLY. I made the mistake early in my career by releasing my books under my personal account rather than a business account. Same with a couple of other retailers. I started switching titles over to the business account back in 2016, but I didn't get everything moved before I was diagnosed with breast cancer. So, while I update the back matter, I'm updating the covers before I upload them. It's been years since I looked any of them over, it's been interesting how my style has changed.

Plus, I'm assigning the copyrights to the company, so when I pass, the administrator of my estate won't have to do much paperwork for the company to change hands.

83 books takes some time to update and move. So, I'm glad I'm glad to finishing up that portion of the business changes.

After nearly two years, I also glad to release Feline Navidad into the wild.

BLURB

After a horrible, traumatizing autumn, the Wilson family panics when a holiday tree mysteriously appears in their living room. As the twins search for their benefactor or foe, neither Kaley or Kristen bothers to ask their familiars. And Teller and Penn know who the real culprits are.

Enjoy this light-hearted tale of friends trying to make the holidays special for the people they care about, the cats who face a major translation problem, and the fae-blessed man in a red suit who can fix anything.

I Give Up

Seriously, I just give up. I've been fighting depression brought on by Seasonal Affective Disorder over the last two months, and my writing is showing it. No one wants to read something by someone who doesn't have the ability to entertain them.

I had a similar issue when COVID lockdowns began while I was writing the first three Millersburg Magick Mysteries. So, I'm taking a break for the next ten days. I've got cooking and other prep to do for the rest of the winter holidays. So what I'm trying to say...

I am sincerely sorry that Feline Navidad and A Cup of Conflict won't be done before the end of 2024.

Even if by some Christmas miracle I get them both done tonight, I AM NOT going to interfere with my formatter and cover artist's time with their own families over the next ten days. That's just not right by any stretch of the imagination.

For those who may be worried that I won't finish with either series, DH has been gently attempting to prod me along. A few of my older readers aren't the only ones who are concerned about me not finishing the Justice series before they die. I'm concerned about writing them before I die, too.

First of all, I turn the big 6-0 next year, just like the rest of the eldest Gen-Xers. Second, I've worked too hard to regain my physical health over the last few years to throw it all away now. Third, DH and I have attended more funerals than usual this year. As he said, we are simply in that age.

But I know things will get better. I'm taking a writing class in Vegas in three weeks, and a lot more sunshine than I've been receiving will help. Also, we're past the solstice, so the days will get gradually longer. Between Groundhog Day (Imbolc) and Valentine's Day, I'll start feeling a lot better.

To everyone reading this, please take care of yourselves and your loved ones. Depression is an insidious disease that takes too many lives. If you need help, for Goddess's sake, please get help. There's nothing to be ashamed of, and the people who love you want to keep you in this world.

To everyone, may you have blessed holidays with the people you love no matter which holidays you celebrate!

Typing Furiously

All of the short stories have been submitted to the requesting editors except for the one that isn't due until December 31st. Yesterday, I started back on Feline Navidad. However, I didn't get as far as I wanted.

On the plus side, Darling Husband put up his Christmas tree with no help from me (I was struggling with words on my travel laptop in an empty Starbucks), and I must admit it's cute.

As of right now, I have approximately six days to finish writing and then publish this year's holiday story for my readers. Can I do it? I think so. All presents have been sent except for two I need to mail and one more I need to select. I have a few holiday cards to send to older relatives who love getting that type of thing.

My goal is to get all this holiday stuff done before DH and I watched It's a Wonderful Life over our Christmas Eve dinner of chicken spinach phyllo and watch football next Wednesday.

Go Steelers! Go Texans!

I hope y'all have a wonderful holiday, no matter which one you celebrate!

Status Update - November 2024

Despite my best efforts, A Cup of Conflict is not finished. I'd much rather be late than publish a substandard story. So what does this mean, other than Justice #10 won't be available on Friday?

I'm switching my current efforts to finishing Feline Navidad (Millersburg Magick Mysteries #4) since it's supposed to be released on December 1. And with peppermint mochas and Red Cups at Starbucks, it'll be easier to get into the winter holidays spirit.

Once Feline Navidad is squared away, I'll finish A Cup of Conflict. Come hell or high water, it will be released in 2024!

The Latest News

I'm still cleaning up the last bit of October's Kickstarter and finally sending out holiday cards and presents. If I can stay awake, that is.

Yep, I slept seventeen hours straight yesterday. Part of it is introvert exhaustion, part is Seasonal Affective Disorder, and part is the overcast skies in between winter storms.

When I am awake, I am writing, albeit bits and pieces. I was working on A Cup of Conflict when DH said, "I thought you were finishing Death Goddess Walking first."

My answer to him is not safe for publication.

Sometimes, we writers need to work on whatever the Muse demands. As long as my progress is forward, I consider it a win. However, Conflict's chapter four is a little slow. I'm not sure yet if it's a real problem, or if Subconscious is setting up something for down the road. I'll be re-reading and editing it over the weekend.

In the meantime, the revised Fae and Felonies (Millersburg Magick Mysteries #2) will be released on Monday, January 15th, in both ebook and print at your favorite retailers!

Back From Vegas

DH and I are fine. We left Las Vegas last Friday, long before the asshole opened fire at the UNLV campus on Wednesday. We're still exhausted from the trip, and I'm playing catch-up on things.

Like giving the dogs a bath. Bella and Blaze came home with a funky smell from the other dogs at the puppy hotel despite being groomed yesterday.

In the meantime, the Justice books are on sale for one more day because I didn't get around to taking them off sale early this morning.

Pestilence in Pumpkin Spice will be $0.99 until the end of the year.

I need to get the Millersburg Magick Mysteries to the Kickstarter backers. (I re-edited the last two while DH drove.) I also need to finish this year's Christmas story before my cataract surgery next Wednesday.

Y'all will have Chapter 3 of A Cup of Conflict next Wednesday!

Take care of yourselves and your loved ones. Life is terribly short.

Back from My Mini Vacation

I joined a friend in Chicago for a couple of days this week. For both of us, it was work-related stress relief. She was taking a certification course in downtown, so I drove over to meet her. While she was attending her class, I wrote in our hotel room. We both got plenty of exercise walking around Michigan Avenue, searching out some good food. Plus, it was so nice talking to a person I've known for decades.

In the meantime, the Millersburg Magick Mysteries Kickstater camapaign successfully funded. Tomorrow, I'll send out the surveys. All rewards, both digital and physical, will be sent before Thanksgiving. If you missed the campaign, contact me through the tab at the top of the website, and I'll accommodate you.

Halloween Harvest, in which my story "A Place at the Table" appeared, is part of the 2023 Halloween Storybundle. We're supporting Maui Strong, an aid organization that is helping the residents of Lahaina, who lost everything in wildfires earlier this year.

The second and third books of the Millersburg Magick Mysteries series will be released over all retailers the next three and a half weeks.

Also, the Soccer Moms of the Apocalypse series will be released on all retailers on November 8th.

That's all the news for now. Next week, I'll be posting more samples of Death Goddess Walking.

Have a most excellent weekend, everyone!

Last Week for the Millersburg Magick Mysteries Kickstarter Campaign!

The Millersburg Magick Mysteries Kickstarter Campaign is down to its last six days!

Get all three e-books, plus Amish, Vamps & Thieves (Bloodlines #4) which introduced several of the Millersburg adults, for only $10. Yep, that's half the price you would pay if you get all four books from an online retailer.

It's pretty simple. Kickstarter handles the transactions, so you're not giving me any credit card numbers. If you pledge for a physical reward, I'll need your snail mail address, but that's it. Between Kickstarter's rules and my own personal policy, no one else sees your personal info.

These YA books would make lovely holiday gifts for your young person.

Millersburg Magick Mysteries closes on Tuesday, October 17th, at 11:59 PM EDT. Check out this campaign before it's too late!

Millersburg Magick Mysteries Kickstarter Campaign Funded!

I'm amazed and grateful my second Kickstarter funded in less than a week. I'd barely started promoting it. So a huge "Thank You" to everyone who's backed the campaign!

If you haven't checked it out yet, here's the link!

It's Officially Live!

I hit the publish button last night. The Millersburg Magick Mysteries Kickstarter campaign is officially up and running!

I really hope everyone will check out the campaign. It was nice to delve back into a world that's a lot of fun. Plus, I've got the covers for the next three books, so I'll have some fun over next summer!

The campaign will run until 11:59 p.m. EDT on Tuesday, October 17th.

Pre-Launch Page for Kickstarter Is Live

It's happening! My campaign was approved earlier than I thought it would. I now have an active pre-launch page! Hopefully, my pink hair in the video isn't too shocking. LOL

Yes, I'm giggling gleefully! I can't wait!

Change of Plans

I'd planned to send the first three paperbacks of the Millersburg Magic Mysteries to a couple of friends' daughters for #AllHallowsRead this year. Plus, I've been having fun with some bead work and found some cute sugar skull charms to go with the theme, so I decided to make the girls Dia de los Muertos bookmarks to go with the books.

As I'm working on the bookmarks, I realized the series and the sugar skull bookmarks would make a perfect #Witchstarter campaign! This will now be my second Kickstarter campaign!

It's gong to be short and sweet. Two weeks. $100 goal. Only the Millersburg Magick Mysteries ebooks and paperbacks and the Dia de los Muertos bookmarks for the main rewards. Maybe some stickers for the first stretch goal.

I'll post here and on the www.suzanharden.com website at the end of September before the campaign goes live.

Note 1: All Hallow's Read was started back in 2010 by Neil Gaiman as a book-giving holiday for us non-Icelanders. Iceland has Jolabokaflod, which makes me want to move there!

Note 2: Witchstarter is the name given to October Kickstarter campaigns with a magickal theme.

New Release - Spells and Sleuths

Today is the official release day of the new version of Spells and Sleuths (Millersburg Magick Mysteries #1).

This story first came out back near the beginning of the pandemic shutdowns. The series was meant to be a light-hearted, Scooby-Doo-style sequel to Bloodlines.

What I didn't realize at the time was that I was suffering from depression. When I read the first three books later that summer, my mental illness showed through my writing. It was the first time I was ever incredibly unhappy with something I'd created. So I pulled the books from Amazon, and swore to rewrite them.

But then, I had a number of life rolls, and I never got back to the Millersburg Magick Mysteries until this summer. In fact, I carved out the last half of 2023 to finish these books. And I'm a lot more satisfied with Spells and Sleuths the second time around.

BLURB
It’s been eleven years since supernaturals were revealed to the world during the eruption of Mount Rainier. But small-town life in Millersburg, Ohio, hasn’t changed that much.

At least, not for twin witches Kirsten and Kaley Wilson. Not until an alleged ghost starts haunting local landmarks, including the girls’ high school. Hauntings that become more violent and dangerous with each event.

Is the ghost a true supernatural phenomenon? Or has something else come back seeking revenge?

Suzan Harden, the author of the Bloodlines and the Soccer Moms of the Apocalypse series, brings you a paranormal mystery set in the heart of Ohio Amish country that will chill and thrill you at the same time!

P.S. The Millersburg Magick Mysteries will be available on Kindle Unlimited until the end of the year.

Back to Writing Again

After five days of transferring files to my new laptop, I have everything I need to get back to writing. There were more than a few hiccups along the way, and there's still some apps I need to install. However, the only things left are my entertainment files, music, movies, books, etc.

But the big thing is finishing the three short stories I meant to complete last week before the old laptop started acting up. For those who have been checking on a daily basis, I haven't set up the preorder for Too Many Fish in the Sea (Justice Thalia #5) since I have not finished it yet.

Spells and Sleuths, the first of the rewritten Millersburg Magick Mysteries, is done, but it won't be released to the general public until the Kickstarter backers get their copies. And that won't be until I finish Analyze Me and Demons Run at Halloween. It's easier, and fewer headaches for both me and the backers, to send out everything at the same time.

And I do have a hard deadline to get everything finished. I considered retreating to one of our local Starbucks (yes, the second independent store has opened in our town) in the mornings. However, smoke from the Canadian wildfires has flooded the area again, which makes going outdoors darn uncomfortable.

*sigh* Just when I start to feel comfortable going out in public again...

All Physical Packages Shipped!

It took me nearly a month, but all the books and goodies from the Soccer Moms of the Apocalypse have been shipped! I can see my fireplace again!

What's left?

I've got digital stretch rewards to finish:

- The Spells and Sleuths paperback interior has been delivered by my formatter, so one last proof on that before uploading the ebook

- The audiobook for Apocalypse, Not Now! has been delivered by my narrator, so proof that

- Finish writing Analyze Me and record the audiobook

- Finish writing Demons Run at Halloween and record the audiobook

And I need to finish all this before I head west for a writers' retreat in July.

I think I can get it all done. I hope I can get it all done. I want to start on a new project for Camp NaNo!

Winter 2023 Update

A Hint of Thief dropped on Amazon on Monday. I'm still working on getting files uploaded to the other retailers It's the first time I've met a deadline since August of 2022. And It was definitely a relief. As always, I'll update the Justice series page when the other retail links go live.

I'm working on Death in Double Mocha. This one is more than a relief. January is only a little over half over, and I've written nearly 30K words. For a slow writer like me, this is marvelous.

If you haven't read "A Place at the Table" under the Free Short Story tab, you have until January 31st to do so. I will be putting up a new free story on February 1st.

When I'm caught up on the Soccer Moms of the Apocalypse campaign rewards, I'll finish the re-writes of the first three books of the Millersburg Magick Mysteries and re-release them.

In between all of this, I'll be working on Queer Eye for the Super Guy.

It feels good getting back to normal around Casa Harden!

Status Report - May 2021

Hey folks!

After putting out books every month since February 2020, I'm taking a little break for June and July this year. For those who haven't heard, DH and I will be first-time grandparents!

Adorable Spawn's due date is July 6, but babies like to come on their own time table. Not to mention Genius Kid and Significant Other live 1300 miles away, so we're keeping our options open.

That doesn't mean things won't be happening!

1) From now until the Fourth of July, Bloodlines: The First Boxed Set will be on sale for $0.99! The first three Bloodlines novels are sexy, hot hero fun when you're lounging by the pool or on the beach this summer.

[ETA] Oops! I forgot the buy links!

                                                         Amazon, all countries
                                                         Apple
                                                         Barnes & Noble
                                                         Google Play
                                                         Kobo
                                                         Smashwords

2) The rest of the Bloodlines series (Books 2-9) are on sale from $2.99 to $3.21.

3) If you're outside the U.S. or you use another retailer other than Amazon, Blood Magick is free. For those of you in the U.S., Amazon set it to free last week, then abruptly raised the price on Friday. I've complained a few times, and the answers from Amazon have ranged from "It's a problem with your browser" to "Tough shit, we can do what we want".

So I'm asking you to please contact Amazon's customer service and complain. They will listen to customers before they will listen to me, though I plan to constantly nag them from now to Labor Day.

3) The two-month break doesn't mean I won't be writing. I'm working on rewriting the Millersburg Magick Mysteries, which I hope to have out by August.

4) I'm also working on August's new release, A Hand of Father (Justice #7).

5) The Soccer Moms of Apocalypse series is shaping up. However, I want to have all the books written before I start releasing them. That may mean the first release Pestilence in Pumpkin won't be until November. I really love this series, and I want to make it as perfect as possible,

6) The late release for Soccer Moms is because I'm looking forward to the chaos of A Very Hero Wedding (888-555-HERO #8). Let's face it--weddings can be crazy enough. I know mine was. Add in crazier supervillains on top of crazy relatives, and...

Well, you get the drift.

Anyway, that's what's happening in my world. If you have any comments or questions, enter them in the comments section below, or send me a private message through the Contact Me tab.

Next week, I'll start posting snippets from A Hand of Father.

Off Sale

I've temporarily removed the three Millersburg Magick Mysteries from sale on Amazon.

I could fill several blogs with the reasons, but it comes down to COVID-19. This was supposed to be a light-hearted series, a la Scooby-Doo but with real magick. The final results are not what I hoped to accomplish with this series. Add in some mistakes because my head's not in the game. Top it off with supporting friends who've lost loved ones in the pandemic. It all equals to an emotionally fried mind and soul.

I'm planning to re-do this series. It's not normally what I would do as a writer. But y'all deserve my best efforts, and I don't think I delivered. Millersburg Magick Mysteries will be re-released later the summer.

In the meantime, I'll finish Hero De Jure because this story puts me in a much better headspace. Well, superheroes and lemon Oreos do.

Magick and Murder - Chapter 4

This is the last sample before Magick and Murder's release on Friday.

======================

Standing in canned fruits and vegetables aisle at the IGA, Kaley checked her list again and made a face. “Now where the heck is the cranberry sauce?”

“End cap.” River Martin pointed to the other end of the aisle. “All the canned pumpkin is down there, too.”

It was kind of weird shopping with him like they were a couple. Which they weren’t. At least, not officially though Donny and Mandy Jenkins teased her about it. Kaley consulted the list. “Then, we need green beans, fried onions, and mushrooms.”

“Whole, cut, or French-style?” he asked.

“Whole. Six cans.” She grabbed two canisters of the crunchy fried onions.

“Pieces or slices?”

“Slices. 2 small cans or one large.”

River paused with the large can in his hand. “What do these go in?”

“The green bean casserole, silly.”

He frowned. “No one I know puts mushrooms in green bean casserole.”

“They use cream of mushroom soup, don’t they?”

“Yeah, but…”

“Your people dance around mushrooms. That’s the reason they’re called fairy circles.” She waved her hand nonchalantly. He shook his head and made a face at her. “That’s so racist.”

She cocked her head. “How?”

“Do you make jokes about Donny Fryer peeing on hydrants? Do you make cracks about Carmen Alonzo driving a taco truck?” “Oh.” Kaley winced. “I didn’t think about it that way. I’m really sorry.”

“Not to mention fairy is right up there with the n-word.” River made a slashing motion with his hand. “That’s a good way to find yourself at the pointy end of a sword.”

“The pointy end of a sword?” She grinned.

Red flooded his face and ears, which were decidedly round like his Normal mom’s were.

“You know what I mean,” he said.

“Do tell.” She giggled.

River ignored her comment and tugged on the basket end of their shopping cart. “What’s next on the list?”

“Nice try in changing the subject.” But she consulted her list. “We also need raisins for the mincemeat pie.”

River made a face. “Mincemeat?”

Kaley rolled her eyes as they walked to the end of the aisle where the dried fruit was. “Dad loves it, and Mom made a point of asking Grandma Wilson for the recipe before she passed away. Personally, I’m not a big fan of meaty and sweetie in the same dish.”

“So no pineapple with your ham?” He grabbed a bag of the store-brand raisins.

“That’s the one exception,” she muttered.

Her phone buzzed, and she pulled it out of her jeans pocket. A sick feeling ran through her as she read Kirsten’s message. A ton of curse words ran through her mind. She whirled around, examining each face. Where would the next threat come from?

“Hey.” River grabbed her arm. “What happened?”

She couldn’t say a word past the lump of fear in her throat. She’d never been afraid of people in her hometown. Not before today.

River gently cupped her right hand and raised it so he could see her phone screen. His eyes narrowed, and his lips thinned.

“Let’s get your mom’s groceries,” he said softly. “That’ll be one thing off her mind. And Grandma and I will definitely be at your house on Thursday.”

Kaley swallowed hard and nodded. “She’s bringing the sweet potatoes, right?”

He grinned. “With lots of marshmallow fluff.”

“Fluff? No mini-marshmallows?”

“Trust me, you like this better. More marshmallow to potato flavor.”

“All right.” She nodded again.

River released her hand, and she found herself missing his touch. She shoved her phone back in her jeans pocket and snatched up Mom’s list to cover her discomfiture. “Let’s grab the cranberry sauce and pumpkin before heading to the dairy section.”

They raced as quickly as they could around the other shoppers and collected the remainder of Mom’s grocery list. Except when they reached the check-out lanes, other shoppers stared at her. However, it wasn’t the usual friendly faces of people recognizing one of the senior cheerleaders from her letterman jacket.

The elderly woman in line in front of Kaley gave her an odd look before she crossed herself. Now, what was that all about? Kaley frowned It wasn’t like she was wearing pentacles, and there was no way the woman could know about her steel triquetra key chain. The elderly woman slammed the divider down after her items and glared at Kaley as if daring her to move it.

She swallowed her unease. They just needed to get the groceries rung up and paid for so they could get the heck out of the grocery store. She and River unloaded items of the cart onto the conveyor belt.

Thankfully, they were in Shannon Murphy’s lane. Shannon had been Kaley and Kirsten’s babysitter when they were little. Her husband passed away shortly after he retired, she started working at the grocery store, more to do something than to supplement her savings.

“Hey, Shannon.”

“Hey, kiddo!” Shannon’s wide smile helped ease the tension in Kaley’s shoulders. “Your mom gotcha doing the Thanksgiving shopping, huh?”

“Yeah, she’s doing things up big since she’s afraid Kirsten and I will never come home for a holiday again.” Kaley grabbed her stack of reusable bags and started sacking groceries.

“And your friend?” Shannon said coyly.

“River, this is our friend Shannon.” Kaley chuckled at her former babysitter’s antics. “River is Cissy Martin’s grandson.”

“I’d heard Heather and her boy had moved back here. Nice to meet you River.” Shannon nodded to him.

“Ma’am.” He moved to the end of the line and started putting the cold items into the insulated bag.

“Kaley Wilson!”

Goddess, what now? She steeled herself before she turned to face Mrs. Ryder. “Yes, ma’am?”

“Your mother is just as dangerous as you are!” Mrs. Ryder shrieked as she waved her phone in Kaley’s face.

“What?” Kaley couldn’t make out anything on the video playing on the phone with Mrs. Ryder’s jerky motions. River inserted himself in front of Mrs. Ryder and grabbed her wrist in mid-swing. “Watch what you’re doing.”

“Let me go,” she spat.

“Then quit trying to hit Kaley,” he bit back.

“What’s going on here?” The store manager Mr. Bickle strode toward Shannon’s aisle, a distraught expression on his face. “Why are allowing those people to shop in your store?” Mrs. Ryder screeched.

“What people?” Mr. Bickle looked thoroughly confused.

“That bitch put a hex on my daughter!” Mrs. Ryder pointed at Kaley.

“Your daughter tried to hit me, and I ducked,” Kaley protested. “It’s not my fault she’s a clumsy cow and screwed up her knee.”

“Ladies, please.” Mr. Bickle looked like he was about to cry behind his wire rims.

“Of course, you get it straight from your mother!” Mrs. Ryder shook her fist at Kaley.

Shannon waddled from behind her register. “Do we need to call the police, or are you going to leave quietly?”

“You’re going let that little bitch stay?” Mrs. Ryder’s shock that someone took Kaley’s side was mirrored by a few other people. Everyone else simply appeared disgusted.

Shannon crossed her arms and glared at Mrs. Ryder. “That little girl ain’t the one causing a scene in public. You are. Now, once again, do I need to call the police?”

Realizing Shannon was the proverbial immoveable object, Mrs. Ryder turned to Mr. Bickle. “Are you going to let your employee insult me like that?”

The manager seemed to find his backbone. He straightened and glared at Mrs. Ryder. “The only one tossing out insults and creating a disturbance is you.”

“I’m going to report you to the owner,” Mrs. Ryder said.

Shannon pointed overhead. “Make sure you tell him about the security video capturing your performance when you call him. Oh, wait. Isn’t Ron Schneider your ex-husband?”

Mrs. Ryder blinked rapidly, shocked by the turnaround in circumstances. More than half of the crowd watching the drama tittered. Seeing no allies, she pivoted and marched out of the grocery store.

Shannon waddled back to her register. Kaley tried to breathe normally as she slipped Mom’s debit card into the reader. It took a couple of tries to get the PIN right. She could feel all the eyes on her. Finally, the device beeped, and she pulled out the card.

River had bagged the rest of the groceries and loaded them into the cart.

Shannon handed Kaley the receipt and gave her a reassuring smile. “You tell your mom and dad hello for me.”

“I will.” Kaley waved. “Happy Thanksgiving.”

“You too, darling.”

Kaley and River headed for the exit. She sagged when she saw Mrs. Ryder still in the parking lot. Amelia’s mom was speaking with a man Kaley didn’t recognize.

He was a few inches taller than Mrs. Rider. He wore a leather jacket and jeans. His dark hair was just long enough not to be a buzz cut, but too short to be a crew cut. But the most prominent feature was a jagged scar down his cheek. The pair looked toward Kaley and River with ugly expressions on their faces.

Kaley and River quickly loaded their bags into the back of his blue PT Cruiser. Mrs. Ryder and the gentleman with her were still staring at them.

“Take a selfie,” River whispered.

“What?”

He wrapped an arm around her waist and held her so their backs were to Mrs. Ryder and the stranger. Her body immediately warmed at his touch, but she did as he asked and took a picture of the two of them.

“Can you do a close-up of the guy with Mrs. Ryder?” River whispered.

Kirsten swallowed and changed the settings. River nodded when he saw the resulting photo. “Send a copy to me.”

“Why?” “In case anything happens to your phone. Get in the car,” River whispered. “I’ll take care of the cart.”

“Don’t do anything stupid,” Kaley whispered back.

“Who? Me?” River shot her a devilish grin.

That expression sent a shiver through her. No wonder Olivia Burke looked at him like a prime Angus steak. Kaley could see why River’s mom had fallen under his dad’s spell. She nodded and climbed into his car.

It never failed to amaze her how clean the interior of his Cruiser was compared to the cars of all the other guys in school. And it always smelled like cedar and baklava inside though he didn’t have an air freshener anywhere. She had checked.

Fae magick jabbed Kaley’s psyche, and despite the need to raise a ward, she concentrated to keep her own power from reacting to the alien sensation. River opened the driver side door and slid into the Cruiser. A self-satisfied smirk tilted his mouth.

She crossed her arms. “What did you do?”

“Nothing that’ll harm anyone.”

“What. Did. You. Do.”

“You’re not the only one who has talent with air.” He grinned and backed out of their parking space.

As they drove past Mrs. Ryder, Kaley could see the tires on her Cadillac. Especially the flat front left tire.
