Status Update - January 2025

The new year has has launched another series of life rolls. But not all of them are bad!

A Barrel of Vintner is going to be longer than I anticipated as I wrap up a bunch of story threads from the entire Justice series in these last three books.

On the other side, the Justice cover artist had her first grandchild last week! Yes, the e-book/front cover has been completed for some time, but she can't create the full paperback cover until my formatter completes the interior. And my formatter can't do the interior until I finish writing the story.

Which leads to my next delay. My cover artist will be flying to see her new grandbaby and staying to help the new parents for a little while. As soon as I know how things will shake out, I'll inform you of the revised release date.

I hope everyone survived Winter Storm Fern!

I'm Still Kicking!

I know, I know. I haven't written a blog post in over two months. A lot of life rolls happened.

It started with a traffic accident a few days after my last post. Thank goodness, the other driver wasn't injured, but I heavily bruised my left hand, including a torn vein. It looked pretty bad, but no broken bones, thank Goddess! Unfortunately, the injury limited my time on the computer for a week.

I'd also planned to launch a Kickstarter campaign for The Books of Apep series with gorgeous specialty hardcovers. On top of my hand injury, Tribblehead launched a full-in tariff war with China where a lot of specialty books are printed, and the Kickstarter Union went on strike just to keep the benefits they currently had. I thought I'd be able to move the campaign from the beginning of the month to the end of the month. It soon became clear that I might not be able to deliver any rewards in a timely manner, so I never launched the campaign.

*sigh*

I've been planning this dang campaign for the last two years. On the positive side, I will try again in March now that the strike is settled and trade between China and the U.S. is flowing again. But to go into all the vagaries of Kickstarter will require a whole explanation of its own, which I will post later this month.

Then DH and I have had to scramble because because our home insurance was cancelled. State Farm didn't like that our sump pump has backed up twice in four years. We know the cause (not us!), and DH is looking into legal action against the neighbors who will NOT fucking maintain their pond. When the pond overflows it turns our yard into a lake. Complete with mallards teaching their ducklings to swim.

On top of that, our antique car insurance policy was cancelled because I've been involved in two accidents over the last thirteen months. The sad part is I don't drive the older cars, and the vehicle involved in the two accidents isn't on the antique policy. The decision only harms DH because he likes to take the collectibles to car shows.

With all the craziness, I didn't make it to my cousin's in October like I planned. Instead, I drove down for her birthday the week before Thanksgiving. It was nice to get away from the stress at home for a little while.

But while I was gone, one of my sisters-in-law (SIL #2) fell and broke her humerus (the upper arm bone) of her dominant hand. It made things difficult, so SIL #4 stayed with her the week of Thanksgiving, then I drove to Indiana and stayed with her last week. SIL #2 is doing much better now.

In between the major issues, I've been alternating writing with unpacking moving boxes. Yes, these are the boxes from when we moved into this house five years ago. The place is slowly taking shape and finally starting to look like a home.

So, that's where we are Casa Harden. It hasn't been one of my better years for writing, but I'm looking forward to finishing my partly written projects and getting them out to all of you.

Including the last three novels of the Justice series.

Keeping my fingers crossed that 2026 will be a much smoother year.

What the Hell Is Going on with Suzan?

It's been a little insane at Casa Harden over the last few weeks. The chaos started with one of DH's remaining uncles passed away. It ended with me slipping on ice, tripping over a landscaping brick, and somehow falling on the frozen ground instead of the concrete driveway the day before the Alberta Clipper swept through our area.

I'm still unsure how I managed to injure my right thumb in that delightful show of clumsiness.

Hey, at least, I didn't fall on Princess Bella. The poor thing was merely trying to hurry to get her final constitutional done for the night because even she was cold wearing a t-shirt and her winter coat. (She's a toy breed, and you have to bundle them up because they cannot control their core temps the way a larger dog can.)

There's been a lot more happening in between the emotional and physical aches, but I won't bore you with those details. What it comes down to is I am behind.

So woefully behind.

And what happens? I get invitations from two different editors asking me to submit short stories for their holiday anthologies. For 2025! By the end of the month!

*sigh*

Folks, I literally just finished sending last year's Christmas presents to people!

So, what does it all mean?

It means I'm busting my ass trying to get the books y'all are expecting. I merely took the dates off the Release Schedule because looking at the page was triggering my anxiety.

Today, I skipped yoga, I made sure I had plenty of coffee and tea, and I will be back on the keyboard as soon as I get home from the COVID booster stab.

That's assuming I don't bash my brains on the asphalt in the pharmacy parking lot.

Some Good News for the Rest of the Year

Today, I updated the Release Schedule on my website for the rest of the year. I tried to write a sequel short for a short story I did back in 2021, and this one wants to become a novel. So, I'm going to post the original to see what you folks think.

In October, a Halloween short story I wrote for an anthology will be published. November's release will be the next Justice novel, A Cup of Conflict. And December's release will be the Millersburg Magick Mystery Christmas tale I meant to have out last year before I had to have cataract surgery.

This is been a very weird year, but I'm looking forward to finish writing everything on my plate and getting those stories to you!

Winter 2023 Update

A Hint of Thief dropped on Amazon on Monday. I'm still working on getting files uploaded to the other retailers It's the first time I've met a deadline since August of 2022. And It was definitely a relief. As always, I'll update the Justice series page when the other retail links go live.

I'm working on Death in Double Mocha. This one is more than a relief. January is only a little over half over, and I've written nearly 30K words. For a slow writer like me, this is marvelous.

If you haven't read "A Place at the Table" under the Free Short Story tab, you have until January 31st to do so. I will be putting up a new free story on February 1st.

When I'm caught up on the Soccer Moms of the Apocalypse campaign rewards, I'll finish the re-writes of the first three books of the Millersburg Magick Mysteries and re-release them.

In between all of this, I'll be working on Queer Eye for the Super Guy.

It feels good getting back to normal around Casa Harden!

Status Report for September 2022

This week is a little nuts. I'm behind again.

There was another death in the family, for a total of three in the last eight months. I'm so done with funerals for 2022. Then we dealt with some major moving of furniture over Labor Day weekend.

No, DH and I did not move to a new living space. It was a matter of removing the pieces of furniture from the in-law's home the siblings wished to keep and taking said furniture to said siblings' homes. All of the work is dedicated to getting the house cleaned out and on the market.

I've spent the last couple of days typing at a furious pace to catch up. E-books will be out on time, but I'm not going to get the last of the paperbacks completed and shipped next week as I had hoped. All I can do is to keep chugging away at my to-do list.

All of the personal mishaps has made me rethink my next Kickstarter. I'll spend the winter and spring writing the next quadrilogy before I launch the campaign. It will be better for my nerves.

Status Report - April 2022

Things have been a little crazy at Casa Harden during March. The highly successful Kickstarter campaign for Soccer Moms of the Apocalypse was the highlight.

However, my FIL fell in his apartment on the date of the official launch. Broken hip, broken hand, and nasty cut on his forehead were followed by surgery on the hip and a nasty antibiotic-resistant staph infection. To top off the issues, the staff at the rehab center rushed him to the ER when his heart enzymes went wonky. Twice. Needless to say, the situation has put a crimp in both mine and DH's work schedule.

What does that all mean?

Things are still on track for Soccer Moms, and I'm keeping my fingers crossed it remains that way. The slippage came with A Measure of Knowledge. I could finish it in time for its original April 15th release date, but editing and formatting would be haphazard at best.

So, to make sure everything is done properly, I moved the release date back to May 15th. I apologize to everyone who pre-ordered the book, but I want to make sure you get a quality product.

In the meantime, there's two days left on the Kickstarter, and there's lots of new stretch goal rewards!

Thank you, everyone, for your generosity and your patience.

Status Report - May 2021

Hey folks!

After putting out books every month since February 2020, I'm taking a little break for June and July this year. For those who haven't heard, DH and I will be first-time grandparents!

Adorable Spawn's due date is July 6, but babies like to come on their own time table. Not to mention Genius Kid and Significant Other live 1300 miles away, so we're keeping our options open.

That doesn't mean things won't be happening!

1) From now until the Fourth of July, Bloodlines: The First Boxed Set will be on sale for $0.99! The first three Bloodlines novels are sexy, hot hero fun when you're lounging by the pool or on the beach this summer.

[ETA] Oops! I forgot the buy links!

                                                         Amazon, all countries
                                                         Apple
                                                         Barnes & Noble
                                                         Google Play
                                                         Kobo
                                                         Smashwords

2) The rest of the Bloodlines series (Books 2-9) are on sale from $2.99 to $3.21.

3) If you're outside the U.S. or you use another retailer other than Amazon, Blood Magick is free. For those of you in the U.S., Amazon set it to free last week, then abruptly raised the price on Friday. I've complained a few times, and the answers from Amazon have ranged from "It's a problem with your browser" to "Tough shit, we can do what we want".

So I'm asking you to please contact Amazon's customer service and complain. They will listen to customers before they will listen to me, though I plan to constantly nag them from now to Labor Day.

3) The two-month break doesn't mean I won't be writing. I'm working on rewriting the Millersburg Magick Mysteries, which I hope to have out by August.

4) I'm also working on August's new release, A Hand of Father (Justice #7).

5) The Soccer Moms of Apocalypse series is shaping up. However, I want to have all the books written before I start releasing them. That may mean the first release Pestilence in Pumpkin won't be until November. I really love this series, and I want to make it as perfect as possible,

6) The late release for Soccer Moms is because I'm looking forward to the chaos of A Very Hero Wedding (888-555-HERO #8). Let's face it--weddings can be crazy enough. I know mine was. Add in crazier supervillains on top of crazy relatives, and...

Well, you get the drift.

Anyway, that's what's happening in my world. If you have any comments or questions, enter them in the comments section below, or send me a private message through the Contact Me tab.

Next week, I'll start posting snippets from A Hand of Father.

The Latest News

I'm finally getting the 888-555-HERO series out into the wide world. Hero De Facto has slid out of Amazon's Kindle Unlimited, and I started loading it onto the other retailers last night. Over the next three months, the other three novels of 888-555-HERO will go wide as well. Buy links on the series page will be updated as they go live.

I've also been working on the publishing schedule for 2020. The first six books have pre-orders on Amazon. Once again, I'll update them here and on the main series pages as they go live:

January 15th - A Touch of Mother (Justice #4)

February 14th - Seasons of Magick Anthology (Entire Seasons of Magick series)

March 15th - Spells and Sleuths (Millersburg Magick Mysteries #1)

April 15th - Fae and Felonies (Millersburg Magick Mysteries #2)

May 15th - Magick and Murder (Millersburg Magick Mysteries #3)

June 15th - Hero De Jure (888-555-HERO #5)

The Millersburg Magick Mysteries will be initially exclusively on Amazon's Kindle Unlimited. They're paranormal mysteries set in the Bloodlines World. Kaley and Kirsten's mom Rachel and aunt Jo should be familiar to anyone who's read Amish, Vamps & Thieves.

My other goal is to get my ebooks on the Ohio Public Library system for those of you who rely on libraries for your reading material. If you don't live in Ohio, you can always request my books through your own library!

If anyone has questions or comments and doesn't want to leave them on the blog, you can always contact me through the "Contact Me" tab at the top of the page!

Quick Update!

For those of you waiting for your paperback copies of Resurrected, they are going out in today's mail. I really apologize for the delay, but I had an unexpected out-of-state trip at the beginning of November. I didn't want to order the books and have them show up on my doorstep when we weren't home.

Especially since we ended up getting four and a half inches of snow.

Again, sorry for the delay, and I hope you enjoy your signed copies.

(For those of you who want an opportunity to receive signed books from me, please sign up for my newsletter. Tap the CONTACT ME tab on the website menu and type in you deets.)

Status Report - June 2019

Another life roll happened, which means another delay. To give myself and my subcontractors plenty of time to get things done, I'm pushing the release of A Matter of Death back a month. Which means everything else will be pushed back as well.

Here's the revised release schedule for the remainder of 2019:

July 15 - A Matter of Death (Justice #3) novel

August 15 - Reality Bites (Bloodlines Shorts #3) novella

September 15 - Ghouls in the Grocery Store (Bloodlines Shorts #4) novella

October 30 - Resurrected (Bloodlines #9) novel

December 1 - A Very HERO Christmas (888-555-HERO #4) novella

I'll definitely announce here when preorders go up on the various retailer websites.

What about 2020?

I've made plans to attend a workshop in Las Vegas in February, which involves a lot of writing and reading starting in November. I'll continue to work on my own books in between assignments, so I'm not sure yet how the release schedule will work out yet.

To keep myself and my readers happy, I'll alternate putting out books-- a sword and sorcery, an urban fantasy, a superhero book, then repeat.

If anyone has questions or comments, feel free to leave them below!

End of the Year Round-Up

Well, 2018 wasn't my best year for getting out new books, but it wasn't my worst either.

I started off by releasing the e-books of A Modicum of Truth (Justice #2) in February and Sacrificed (Bloodlines #8) in March.

And if you're a regular reader of my blog, you know everything got put on hold shortly after Easter.

I kept writing though, as best as I could. The trade paperbacks for this year's releases came out in October and December respectively.

Now that I'm relatively healthy, I'm concentrating on putting out a lot of books in 2019. I'm not jinxing myself by giving specific dates until the pre-order is up and running. (Yep, I'm going to try to stay ahead this year!)

- Hero De Facto is back from my alpha reader. I'll do another round of proofreading before sending it off to my formatter.

- Hero Ad Hoc was literally just sent to my alpha reader before I started writing this blog.

- The first draft of Hero De Novo will hopefully be finished before Hero De Facto goes on sale.

- A Matter of Death needs to be completed as well.

- Then if nothing else goes wrong, I'll finish the last three Bloodlines stories and the fourth Justice novel.

If you want to be notified of news about my books, please join my newsletter. (If you are on a mobile device, you will need to go to fullscreen mode to see the sign up.) I only send out newsletters quarterly, so I promise you won't be spammed.

I'm still looking at the possibility of another surgery, so I'm trying very, very hard to get ahead before this happens, if it happens. But right now, I'm just happy to be alive and doing something I absolutely love--making up stories to entertain all of you.

May you all have an awesome New Year!

Tumors, Tubes, and Superheroes

I have breast cancer.

Four words I really never thought I'd say.

The last two months since my annual mammogram have been a whirlwind of tests and doctor visits and raw rage. I had a plan mapped out for releasing eight books this year, and I'm so fucking furious my writing/publishing plan has been blown to hell. However, this isn't the first time cancer has upended my life, though it is the first time I'm on the receiving side.

Jo, one of my writing friends, helped me put together an alternate plan. I keep writing as best I can through the surgeries and treatments, and I don't worry about the production side of things, like editing and formatting until I get through treatment. I don't have to worry about the covers because the lovely Elaina Lee of For the Muse Design already completed them last year, which I'm forever thankful for.

As I write this, it's been ten days since my first surgery, the mastectomy of my left breast. I have Stage II-B lobular invasive carcinoma. While it is the second most common breast cancer, it only affects 10-30% (depending on which literature you read) of diagnosed patients. The five-year survival rate is over 90%, which means I have a damn good prognosis.

When I rolled into the operating room last week, I thought I'd hit acceptance mode. But as I sit here in my recliner, minor irritation is transforming back to rage. My incision site has hit super-itch mode, and my arm rubs against the Jackson-Pratt drain sticking out my side a couple of inches below my very smelly pit.

Which is that way because I can't shave or use antiperspirant right now, and I really can't stand the smell myself, much less want to go out into public. And yes, I am showering.

What does this all mean? When are the books actually coming out?

I'm looking at another four weeks of healing time from the mastectomy. Then comes the radiation and/or chemo. I'm not sure which treatment or combo is likely because the tumor turned out to be larger than what the surgeon and radiologist estimated from the MRIs, the only decent pictures they could get. I haven't talked to the oncologist yet. Worse case scenario is twelve weeks of follow-up treatment, assuming I have no complications from the treatment itself.

There will be another four to six weeks of recovery from the radiation/chemo before the first reconstructive surgery. Four to six weeks of recovery from the first stage before the second reconstructive surgery.

And that takes us roughly to February of 2019 before my life returns to a relatively normal position.

I can hear y'all thinking, "Wait a minute! We have to wait nine months for a new book?"

I don't know if that will be the case. The timeline may be shorter. It may be longer. Despite the mental and emotional bullshit of the last two months, I wrote 42,000 words. I finished the first draft of Hero De Facto, and I'm roughly halfway through Hero Ad Hoc, the first two books of my superhero series. The real question is how much can I get done before chemo brain sets in because that's the real danger to my writing productivity. I can't promise any specific release dates because I can't guarantee what will happen next.

And as they wheeled me into surgery last week, my husband whispered, "You'd better live. You need to finish A Matter of Death."

See? Y'all aren't the only ones ticked with me for leaving A Modicum of Truth on a cliffhanger.

Status Report - January 2018

I can finally say A Modicum of Truth is in the production phase! As in I sent the files to my incredible formatter Jaye Manus at QA Productions last night right before five p.m.

This book kicked my ass. It is literally the longest book I've ever written, clocking in at a final word count of 100,362.

Yeah, yeah, I know the word count was at 89K when I finished the first draft. I'm one of those weird writers who add words to a manuscript--all the 'a's, 'to's, 'the's, 'her's, etc. while taking out the unneeded 'that's and 'just's.

Unfortunately, when I write, I don't see the words. I see a movie playing in my head, and I'm trying to take notes.

Sacrificed is next on the block. I'm considering doing a preorder for it, so y'all will know exactly when it is coming out.

After that will be Hero De Facto, which the lovely Elaina Lee at For the Muse Design is currently working on the covers for the series.

But whatever you do, don't ask me when A Matter of Death will be done. My brain needs a break, and I'll have to lash you with a wet noodle if you do.

P.S. A new chapter of Sacrificed will be up next week!

2017 Status Report

If you take a peek at my word count for A Modicum of Truth, you'll see I blew past my original goal of 80K words. No, it's not quite done yet, but the good news is I only have three scenes left to finish. The bad news is it won't be out in 2017 as I promised.

Yes, I feel terrible about it. Yes, I've seen y'all peeking in at the Justice Series main page. But, I am trying to finish it. You can ask my family. No pies or cookies for Christmas, and they all received gift cards and t-shirts.

Except for DH. He got a new phone, but only because his old one made a rabbit-like squeal and collapsed at 4:00 p.m. EST on December 22nd. All his attempts to resuscitate where unsuccessful. Time of death was called at 6:32 p.m. EST.

And with half of his staff out on vacation, DH really needed to have a mobile phone. So we rushed over to the AT&T store before it closed at 8 p.m.

The whole episode was rather amusing. We take turns over who gets the REALLY expensive gift for the year, and this year was DH's turn. First, he wanted a new phone. Then, he wanted a large-screen TV. Finally, it was a new laptop.

And all of my budgeting got shot to hell when first, my car was rear-ended, then Genius Kid's car broke down, and finally, thanks to the stupid tax bill, we needed to pay some expenses in 2017 that we wouldn't be allowed to write off next year.

So in the end, I had to dip into our savings to buy DH a fairly necessary item.

Yeah, it's little things like those that really screw with my daily schedule.

New year! New focus! Right?

Right!

Here's to a fruitful 2018!

Where's the New Chapter?

I know you're looking for a new chapter of A Modicum of Truth. Right now, I'm feverishly scribbling down the big climatic scenes (yes, scenes as in two). So this is a quick note letting you know the progress.

In addition, I've had numerous requests for additional information. I can say one wish will be granted. You'll get three appendices: one listing the Temples and their functions, one with places, and one with characters. The trick is editing my personal notes so you don't end up with a bunch of spoilers. 😉

Eventually, I hope to put out a hardback special edition encyclopedia of this world with pictures and maps, similar to Anne McCaffrey's The People of Pern and The Atlas of Pern. But like anything else in life, that's money and time down the road.

Most of all, I want to say thank you to all the readers who loved a little short story and allowed me to make it a fully realized world!

Status Update - September 2017

I sent the edited manuscript for Ravaged to my beta reader yesterday morning. Once I get their notes back, I'll do one more editing pass. Then proofreading before the files go to my formatter. Yay!

I didn't get as far as I planned on A Modicum of Truth in August, but on the plus side, the paperbacks and wide e-book distribution for Zombie Wedding, Amish, Vamps & Thieves, and Blood Sacrifice should be available by the end of the month.

That still gives me time to finish and publish A Modicum of Truth before Halloween.

The only weirdness is not resuming work on Four Soccer Moms. Genius Kid got his drivers license before school started and is thoroughly enjoying his independence. On one hand, it saves me a lot of time. On the other, it almost feels like I'm living with a roommate instead of my child.

As Darling Husband pointed out, I got a lot done this summer even though it doesn't feel like it to me. Now that it's Pumpkin Spice season, it's time to buckle down and finish these other books!

We Have Covers!

I haven't made as much progress on projects as I would have liked the last three weeks. But despite the rash of miscommunication with my contractors (which I firmly blame on Mercury in retrograde) and another death in the family (which makes me sad because DH's aunts actually like me), forward motion has been made.

Paperbacks for Blood Magick and Zombie Love are now available. Zombie Wedding, Amish, Vamps & Thieves, and Blood Sacrifice should be up soon.

The Blood Sacrifice e-book with the cute formatting and new cover is finally available.

The page proofs for Sword and Sorceress 32 have been reviewed and returned to our lovely editor Elisabeth Waters. The e-book version is now available for pre-order on Amazon.

After a bunch of e-mail gremlins, Elaina Lee of For the Muse Design delivered this awesome cover for A Modicum of Truth. I think I'll pin this on the wall over my desk to inspire me as I finish the book.

Now it's time to plunge back into the edits for Ravaged.

Have a wonderful weekend, everyone!

What's Happening?

This year didn't get off to the rousing start I wanted. As I said on my post from January 7th, we've had a lot of health issues with in-laws. Unfortunately, things haven't let up any.

On the down side, MIL ended back in the hospital for a week with breathing problems. While the docs were scanning FIL again for a possible source of the leg pain, they found a mass in his bladder. I'm driving him to Toledo for a second opinion next Monday.

On the plus side, MIL has improved greatly since the last scary stint in the hospital. She's still a little shaky when it comes to walking on her own, but she's off oxygen. We moved FIL into an assisted living apartment at the same complex where MIL is doing her rehab. Despite next week's consultation, he was in good spirits tonight and heading to the main dining room for dinner.

Why am I talking about all this?

The recent personal crises have definitely affected my productivity. I got A Question of Balance back from my beta reader some time ago, and still haven't had a chance to go through their notes. The proof copies for the paperback versions of Blood Magick and Zombie Love are still sitting on my desk. The good side is I'm fifty pages into the first book, but I still need to order the proofs for the next two books. Also, the file for Blood Sacrifice needs to be reviewed before going to the my paperback formatter.

Zombie Goddess is sitting at 40.5K, Ravaged at 18K, and Sacrificed at Murphy only knows because I'm writing it on an iPhone app while waiting in various places, and the app doesn't have a word counter.

Plus, I came up with a cool new idea for an urban fantasy series. I scribbled some notes, but trust me I won't write it until the Bloodlines series is done.

None of the above has anything to do with Alter Ego, who is also way behind on her work. LOL

I was so stressed last week that DH made me take Wednesday off. It's amazing how a few episodes of Agent Carter and The Librarians can brighten your perspective.

Once again, I am SOOO thankful that I'm an indie writer. If I were under contract with a trad publisher, I would be royally screwed right now. I may be super slow right now, but I will get something published this year!

The Latest Craziness

When it rains, it pours.

First of all, I've given up trying to fix the damn blog post on my website. Then I found out that the company that subhosts my website is closing, so it's time to make some changes. Over the next month, you'll be seeing the updated "Suzan Harden - Writer" as my webmistress and I migrate the old stuff to a new host.

Jaye and Elaina are jamming on the paperback formatting and new covers respectively for the Bloodlines series. I'd planned to start rolling them out at the beginning of this month. But once again, personal crap has hit the fan. I hope to start uploading by the end of the month along with the new novels.

That same personal crap has put what I hope is a temporary halt on the writing of Hero De Facto. It's frustrating because we're only a handful of chapters from completion and we've got a fantastic cover artist lined up.

The only good news I've got right now is that another Justice Anthea adventure will be in Sword and Sorceress 30 in November. After the bullshit of the last five months, I take that one victory.

I take that back. The other good thing is getting back into Sam's head after three years. I'd forgotten how much fun she is.
